Ecuadorian dragon fruit has earned a privileged place in international markets thanks to its exceptional quality. But when it comes to exporting Dragon Fruit, importers always face the big question: what is the difference between yellow and red dragon fruit?
As direct producers from Rocafuerte, Manabí, at Luma Export we process both varieties, and here we explain everything you need to know.
Yellow Dragon Fruit (Selenicereus megalanthus)
Yellow dragon fruit originates from South America, with Ecuador being a standout producer. Its appearance is unmistakable: a bright yellow skin covered in spines (which are removed during harvest) and a translucent white pulp with larger black seeds.
Key Characteristics:
- Flavor: It is the sweetest variety of all. Its Brix degrees (sugar level) can exceed 20.
- Texture: Its pulp is extremely juicy and refreshing.
- Market: It is highly sought after in the Asian market (especially China and Hong Kong) and in the United States as a premium exotic fruit.
“Ecuadorian yellow dragon fruit has no competition worldwide in terms of sweetness and size. It is truly our yellow gold.”
Red Dragon Fruit (Hylocereus undatus)
This is the variety that most consumers in Europe and North America recognize visually. It has a vibrant magenta skin with green bracts (leaves) resembling dragon scales.
Key Characteristics:
- Flavor: It has a more subtle and delicate sweetness (Brix degrees between 10 and 15), with notes that recall a blend of kiwi and pear.
- Appearance: Its visual contrast between the magenta skin and white (or sometimes red) pulp makes it the favorite for gourmet decoration and mixology.
- Shelf Life: It generally has excellent post-harvest behavior, making it ideal for long sea transit.
Which One Should You Import?
The decision depends entirely on your target market:
- If your customers seek an explosively sweet flavor and pronounced digestive properties, the Yellow is the queen.
- If your market values striking aesthetics for high-end supermarkets and a more subtle flavor, the Red is the safe choice.
At Luma Export we operate our own packing house to ensure that, regardless of the variety you choose, the fruit arrives at your destination complying with the strictest global regulations.
